New Study Links Coronary Microvascular Dysfunction to Long-Term Outcomes
Our latest research findings, published in collaboration with Imperial College London, demonstrate a significant association between coronary flow reserve impairment and adverse cardiovascular events over a five-year follow-up period.
The study, which followed over 500 patients presenting with stable angina but unobstructed coronary arteries, found that those with impaired coronary microvascular function had a twofold higher risk of adverse outcomes, including hospitalization for heart failure and non-fatal myocardial infarction.
These findings underscore the importance of comprehensive physiological assessment in the catheterization laboratory. "We can no longer rely solely on angiographic appearances," said the lead investigator. "Understanding the microcirculation is key to risk-stratifying these patients and tailoring their medical therapy."
The Trust will continue to fund research in this critical area, aiming to identify novel therapeutic targets for microvascular dysfunction.
